Rosecrans Assumes Command in Western Virginia
General William Starke Rosecrans assume command in Western
Virginia replacing General George Brinton McClellan is called to
Washington to assume command there.
Federal troops abandon Fort Buchanan in the New Mexico
Territory.
Lincoln in Washington writes a memorandum on the war in which
he states:
- The blockade must be more effective,
- The garrison at Fort Monroe under General Butler to be
drilled and prepared,
- He wants to hold Baltimore.
- He strengthens the force in the Shenandoah Valley
- He directs the forces in Western Virginia to act on orders
from General McClellan.
- He want General Fremont to push forwards his efforts in
Missouri
- He wants to reorganize the forces that fought at Manasses.
- He wants to disband the three months forces as soon as
possible.
- He wants to bring new volunteer forces forwards as soon as
possible.
